We stress on our entertainment law website at the long-tenured Law Offices of Barry K. Rothman in Los Angeles that, "Everyone's reputation has value."
Film industry icon Johnny Deep knows that acutely well, having recently been dragged through the proverbial mud in a long and notably acrimonious marital dissolution. The globally known actor and actress Amber Heard divorced in 2016 after a short-lived and clearly stormy marriage.
After many months of public sparring featuring what one media account recently termed "allegations of physical abuse, restraining orders, media-mobbed court hearings, leaked texts and pictures of facial bruises," the couple settled out of court. Heard reportedly received about $7 million.
Depp now wants it back, plus scores of millions more. The entertainer filed a lawsuit against Heard earlier this month, apparently being unable to stomach her continued high profile as an advocate for domestic violence abuse victims.
Depp's $50 million defamation legal filing alleges that Heard essentially turned reality upside down in their marriage. He claims that she engaged in multiple fabrications depicting her as a violence victim, when in fact she authored the abusive behavior during their union, with him being the victim. He stresses that the litigation is his attempt to restore a battered reputation.
Depp claims that multiple police officers responding to a violence claim at the couple's home refuted Heard's allegations. His filing also asserts that claims of property destruction were never borne out by either surveillance cameras or eyewitnesses.
Heard's legal team counters that Depp's lawsuit is driven by his inability "to accept the truth of his ongoing abusive behavior."
We will keep readers timely apprised of any material developments that arise in the litigation.
